Moving Checklist

8 Weeks Before Moving:

  • Research moving companies or rental truck options.

  • Create a budget for your move.

  • Declutter your home: Donate, sell, or discard items you no longer need.

  • Begin collecting packing supplies: boxes, tape, bubble wrap, etc.

  • Notify your landlord if you're renting, or inform your real estate agent if you're selling.

6 Weeks Before Moving:

  • Start packing non-essential items.

  • Notify your utility companies to schedule disconnection at your old home and connection at your new one.

  • Arrange for transfer of medical records, school records, and any other important documents.

  • Begin planning your travel arrangements if you're moving long-distance.

4 Weeks Before Moving:

  • Label all packed boxes with their contents and the room they belong to.

  • Notify your insurance providers (health, auto, home) of your upcoming move.

  • Change your address with the post office and update it with your banks, subscriptions, and other important accounts.

  • Confirm the details with your chosen moving company or rental truck provider.

2 Weeks Before Moving:

  • Finish packing most of your belongings, leaving only essential items for the final days.

  • Confirm arrangements with your moving company or friends/family helping you move.

  • Set aside important documents and valuables to carry with you during the move.

  • Confirm your travel plans if you're moving long-distance.

1 Week Before Moving:

  • Confirm the date and time of your move with your chosen moving company.

  • Pack a suitcase with essentials for the first few days at your new home.

  • Defrost and clean out your refrigerator and freezer.

  • Finish any last-minute packing and organizing.

Moving Day:

  • Double-check each room to ensure everything is packed and nothing is left behind.

  • Take final meter readings and photos of your old home for documentation.

  • Supervise the loading of your belongings onto the moving truck.

  • Perform a final walkthrough of your old home to make sure nothing is forgotten.

  • Arrive at your new home before the moving truck to oversee unloading and placement of furniture and boxes.

  • Verify that all belongings are accounted for as they are unloaded.

  • Begin unpacking and settling into your new home!
